Running is one of my hobbies. I do it partly for sailing fitness but mostly because I like the process of covering a significant distance under my own power. On the 20th of May 2012 I have signed up to complete a leg of the Marathon Rely of Great Britain which aims to set a record for the longest continuous running relay using 500 runners to do a lap round the outside of the UK in 26.2 mile chunks. The event is being run in support of Brain Tumor UK, a charity which has special meaning for me since my father died of a brain tumor in 2011. The target is to raise half a million pounds which will go along way towards research into this challenging illness.
Whilst the run covers the entire coastline of England, Scotland and Wales my designated section of the course takes me over the Forth bridge and into Edinburgh, between the hours of 01:30 and 05:30. I didn’t pick this leg because of the scenery but because it’s one of the only dates I could fit in between my transatlantic race and a shorter single handed race in France. The timing isn’t great as spending 25 days at sea aboard a 30ft yacht prior to the run will do nothing for my leg strength, but it’s this or nothing. I am just going to have to train especially hard before hand to make sure a can finish the distance in less than 4 hours.
I hope to raise £1000 pounds for Brain Tumor UK. If you would like to sponsor me please follow go to my justgiving page here. I am also open to anyone who fancies joining in on the run…
